Notions & Notations of a Novice Cook

Datten explains ”Chasing Dragons“ :

I disliked the pharmacology department most during my time on campus. They have some of the most narrow minded, vicious lecturers who spend class and lab time sitting around spreading prestige and giving out punishments. One of them, however, is a sweet lady who likes to Salsa dance and knows the Russian roulette. She was also the one who told us the origins of the term “Chasing Dragons”.

Most people interpret it to chasing the initial high that you get from the first time of using opium (or any drugs, for that matter), but never quite getting there due to the down-regulation of receptors (you develop a tolerance for it). She, however, said that it’s actually because when you light the foil you have to keep the liquid moving in order to maximize the vapour and keeping it from congealing. This created smoke that snakes and winds its way through the air thus resembling a dragon of some sort - of which you’ll have to chase around with your pipe.
