Okay fine, I’ll call this one mango crushed ice. This is a Taiwanese dessert that’s been pretty popular around here. It consists of a whole lot of shaved ice, a few pieces of mango and a “syrup” made from pureed mango flesh and condensed milk. If you feel a little indulgent, then I’d also recommend adding a bit of coconut cream or coconut milk before dowsing the ice with the syrup.

I don’t have an ice shaver and was too lazy to get some shaved ice from the vendors selling it, so I told the house management team to buy me Rp. 1,000’s (less than a nickel) worth of ice and she came back with 3 huge blocks of it. Oy vey. I figured I might as well take out some frustration (upcoming thesis seminar, upcoming oncology exam, tutorial log-book due tomorrow) on it with a wooden rolling pin…and I ended up breaking the darn thing.

In the end I had to resort to crushing some ice-cubes inside a ziploc bag (using the same rolling pin). Can’t really complain since the mango-milk syrup made up for the lack of shaviness. There really isn’t a recipe involved as the amount of ingredients used is up to your liking, but here’s a rough step-by step to it.

MANGO SHAVED (or CRUSHED) ICE:

[ Shaved (or crushed) ice + Mango + Condensed milk + water ] OPTIONAL: Coconut cream

Cut out two cheeks of the mangoes (cheeks just means the flesh on either side of the seed) and cut into cubes. Click here for the step-by-step.

Take the cubed flesh of one mango cheek and puree it with about 1/4 - 1/3 cup of condensed milk. Add 2-3 tablespoons of water (or coconut milk) to thin it out a bit.

Combine the mango cubes from the other cheek with the shaved (or crushed) ice. Keep in the freezer so that it wont melt.

To serve, load up your glasses with the ice-mango mixture and pour the “syrup” on top.
