Making Frozen Hot Chocolate - Notions & Notations of a Novice Cook

Making Frozen Hot Chocolate

I have one thing in common with Kate Beckinsale.

…well, with her character in Serendipity, at least.

In case you can’t see (or understand), the writing says:

“Please return to yours faithfully, 081361211330”

The cashier gave it to me as change when I was grocery shopping on the 18th of February. The date being only 4 days after Valentine’s meant that this was probably some guy’s (or girl’s, I suppose) way to be picked up or called - there were probably millions just like it in the cash register waiting to be handed out to unsuspecting shoppers. And no, I didn’t call the number, despite the numerous dares to do so.

It wasn’t as romantic, but I didn’t really like that movie anyway. What I do like, however, is the idea of frozen hot chocolates that’s the trademark of Serendipity III (that place where they ate the dessert). Make this (because it’s strangely appropriate for this time of year) and embrace the irony of drinking a goblet of hot chocolate that’s going to give you a brainfreeze instead of warming you up.

FROZEN HOT CHOCOLATE (recipe from O magazine):

[ 6 half-ounce pieces of a variety of your favorite chocolates, melted in a double boiler + 2 teaspoons storebought hot chocolate mix + 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar + 1 1/2 cups milk + 3 cups ice ]

*** To melt the chocolate:

Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place it in the top of a double boiler (a small bowl over simmering water), stirring occasionally until melted.

Add the cocoa and sugar into the melted chocolate , stirring constantly until thoroughly blended.

Remove from heat and slowly add 1/2 cup of the milk and stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.

In a blender place the remaining cup of milk, the room temperature chocolate mixture, and the ice.

Blend on high speed until smooth and the consistency of a frozen daiquiri.

Pour into a giant goblet or a tall glass and top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings or chocolate sauce.

Enjoy!
